Based on play this fall, the tamping doesn’t seem to be working to alleviate plugged lies in the bunker faces. Raking the bunker faces seems to counteract the tamping and/or there is too much sand. Why not compact and smooth the vertical bunker faces as many clubs do to solve that problem?
If we make the faces smooth and keep them that way they will develop algae. The surface disruption of lightly raking helps allow the sand to dry and keep the algae away.
